Tis the Season

As much as I’m a fan of the local Olympus sized department store in the mall near my office I can’t help but wonder what they were thinking when they put up this year’s Christmas decorations.

I was there when they started and even the staff looked slightly mystified.

It’s hard to compare Christmas crackers when a lipstick wearing little girl is trying on her mother’s high heel shoes in a three metre long fresco above your head.

They didn’t stop there though. They went all out on the creepy children stakes.

In the kiddie’s section a black and white poster of a child stares out sadly from beneath his hood as if to say “It’s going to be a very bleak Christmas for me this year” and just beneath him a manikin faces the plastic green foliage of the Christmas tree while the others face forward, reminiscent of the Blair Witch Project. I think he even had a mullet.

All this while Amy Winehouse belts out a merry tune about not wanting to go to rehab. Very festive.

Perhaps most people are able to look past this and focus their attention wholly on the yoghurt section but I can’t help but think that the décor is just a little…. Weird.

The stores out there definitely missed the mark this year. That wonderful Christmas Spirit™ that’s supposed to make you want to buy heaps of presents for people just hasn’t materialised yet, despite their best efforts to repackage everything in red and green that’s put in your way so you can’t get to the till. Perhaps it’s the recession. It’s hard to get excited about spending money when there’s not a lot of it to go around.

My laptop and I will be spending the festive season with my best friend in Johannesburg where hopefully much partying will ensue. We even hope to make Christmas dinner. Last time I was up there we made a cake that came out yellow so it should be interesting to see what is born from our kitchen experimentations. There is also going to be lots of cocktail drinking in Sandton where we will be wearing the appropriate oversized sunglasses. I’m told that this is the proper way.

I also need to get some writing done while I’m up there. Lots of things are happening next year! AWESOME things, but more of that later… I promise its going to be explosive. :)
