The beta reader

I went to collect my long-awaited advanced copies this morning, which are sitting in a nice crimson pile on my desk at work.

We have high-school girl job shadowing in editorial. I noticed her this morning sitting at the board-room table, hunched over a magazine, incredibly bored. I decided to try my luck and asked if she wanted a book to read. I gave her a copy of Fuse. I didn’t tell her I wrote it or gave any hint at all.

A few hours later I passed her on my way to the kitchen and she was a good way in to it. She looked up at me and said, “This book is really cool!”

“You can keep it,” I replied.

That's a delicious reward. Seeing someone engrossed in something you wrote. Save me an advance copy and enjoy the sensation of crimson pile!

Thanks Helen. I'm always incredibly nervous at the thought of someone reading anything I've written, but I thought that this would be an ideal testing ground. I'm so glad she's enjoying it :) That's the whole point of publishing isn't it?

Your copy is waiting for you Helen, with stacks of love attached.
