May events

There are plenty of exciting literary events happening in May.

First up is FanCon, which is an extension of the popular Free Comic Book Day (I cosplayed Lumpy Space Princess a few years ago and now never miss it). There’s going to be a HUGE cosplay contest this year, a much bigger venue (The Lookout), as well as a whole line-up of artists and writers talking about their work.

I’m excited to be chairing a panel on Survivor’s Club, the awesome comic by Lauren Beukes and Dale Halvorsen (who the book world will know as illustrator extraordinaire Joey Hi-Fi)

The details of the panel are:

Bestselling novelist Lauren Beukes and award-winning cover designer and co-writer, Dale Halvorsen, pay twisted homage to 80′s horror films with DC Vertigo limited series, Survivors Club. Both fans of the horror genre, and the 80′s classics in particular, the writing duo talk about these influences on the story, the origins of the concept, the collaborative writing process, and what it’s like working under the Vertigo label, a DC imprint long associated with dark fantasy comics.
Speakers: Lauren Beukes, Dale Halvorsen
Moderator: Sally Partridge
Location: Panel Room
Time: Saturday 7 May, 2pm-3pm

You can find out more about FanCon here.

Then the very next week is the Franschhoek Literary Festival. I’ll be chairing a panel on Live-Action Role-Playing, which might just be the coolest gig ever.

The details of the panel are:

Live Action Role Play (LARP) writers Roxy Kawitzky (performance artist and postgraduate researcher in gaming and roleplay) and Simon Ratcliffe (co-facilitator of SA’s largest LARP group) in discussion with young adult author, Sally Partridge (The Goblet Club, Dark Poppy’s Demise) on storytelling through LARP.
Speakers: Simon Ratcliffe, Roxy Kawitzky
Moderator: Sally Partridge
Location: Protea Hotel Room 1
Time: Saturday 14 May, 4pm-5pm
